California/Lomita Park Community Mural Project
San Rafael neighbors, JCAA collaborate on community mural
JulieCoyleArtAssociates of San Rafael has teamed up with a Dominican University of California art class to create a community mural on a retaining wall that has for years been a magnet for graffiti.
The new mural spans the 400-foot wall where Auburn Street turns to Woodland Avenue under the Highway 101 overpass in the Cal Park Hill and Lomita Park areas. The hope is that the artwork — a depiction of animals and plants in a nearby freshwater marsh — will deter vandals from defacing the wall.
Quoted in Marin Independent Journal:
“This has been such a great project,” Rice said. “The process, the partnering, the ultimate product — a gorgeous mural that everyone, the neighbors and the many folks who drive by every day are really appreciating.”
